Competition Rules October 2011.

INTERNAL COMPETITIONS
The Society holds an annual competition for Digital Projected Images and Prints. Such competitions may be entered by fully paid up members of the Society.
The Digital Projected Image Competition is divided in to two categories:
a. Nature
b. Open
The Print Competition is divided in to three categories:
c. Nature
d. Colour
e. Mono
Images entered in either of the Nature categories must conform to the L&CPU definition of Nature as follows:
“Nature photography covers images of birds, plants, animals, fungi etc. provided that they are not domesticated or cultivated. It also covers subjects such as weather and geology provided they are titled to show their significance in the natural world. Any manipulation of the image is limited to minor re-touching of blemishes, exposure, sharpening etc. and must not alter the content of the original image. Titles must be specific and correct. Latin titles are not essential if the species can be accurately titled in English.”
True Nature images may not be used in the Open DPI or Colour and Mono Print categories.
The same or similar images may not be entered in more than one category.

Trophies are awarded for the winner of each competition, the best quality print and the Photographer of the Year as follows:

Williamson Trophy Photographer of the Year
Eric Chambers Trophy Best Digital Projected Image (Open)
CM Clark Trophy Best Digital Projected Image (Nature)
Brigid Wall Trophy Best Mono Print
Easton Trophy Best Colour Print
To be decided Best Nature Print
Brigid Wall Printer Trophy Best Print Quality


In addition to the trophies a certificate will be awarded to the best Novice entrant in each category provided there are two or more entrants. Any member may designate themselves a novice but will be barred from being considered a novice once they have been awarded more than 5 novice certificates.

Digital Images
Digital Images must be submitted as JPEGs and conform to a maximum width of 1024 x 768 pixels high. Entries should be submitted on a CD or other means as defined on the entry form by the Competition Secretary.

Digital entries should include the entry number (1,2,3 or 4) and the title only in the file name. No information may be placed on the image. Digital entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form supplied by the Competition Secretary.


Prints
Prints may be traditional or digital and be home or trade processed but where they are trade processed this must be indicated.

Prints do not need to be mounted. If they are mounted they are subject to a maximum size of 20”x16” (or 50 x 40 cm if they are to be considered for the L&CPU Annual Competition) but with no minimum size. When double mounted the front and back mounts should ideally be kept to the same dimensions to comply with L&CPU standards.

All Print entries must bear the entry number (1,2,3 or 4) and the title only on the back of the print. No other information may be placed on the print (either on the back or front). Print entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form supplied by the Competition Secretary.


General
A maximum of four entries per member is allowed in each competition. They are to be numbered 1 to 4 on the entry form provided. In the event of too many entries being received all the number 4 entries will be excluded.
Prints and Digital Images which are placed in the top three or have received a highly commended or commended may not be used again in internal competitions, Unplaced entries may be re-used freely.

All competitions have an external judge to whom the entries will be submitted in advance of the competition, usually two to three weeks before the competition, unless the judge requests an alternative arrangement.


On the evening of the competition the judge comments on all the entries and places those that he/she considers to be worthy of an award, with due regard for artistic and technical merit, in order. The judge will be advised by the Competition Secretary on the maximum number of awards to be made. This to be 20% of the entries which will include 1st,2nd ,3rd , Highly Commended and Commended.

The authors of the top three placed entries plus the Highly Commended and Commended entries in each competition score points towards the Photographer of the Year competition as follows:

First Place 5 points
Second Place 4 Points
Third Place 3 Points
Highly Commended 2 points
Commended 1 point

EXTERNAL COMPETITIONS
Inter Club Battles
Where these take place Slides/Prints/Projected Digital Images which represent the Society in any battle are chosen by the Selection Committee appointed at the Annual General Meeting or by the Society’s Committee.

Such entries submitted must be titled, correctly spotted, in the case of slides, and bear the author’s name but must not have any reference to the name of the society.

L&CPU Competitions
Paid up members of the Society are eligible to enter work into the Annual Print, Digital Image and Slide Competitions held by the Lancashire & Cheshire Photographic Union to which the Society is affiliated. Entry may be made on an individual basis but all entries must be made through the Society’s Competition Secretary.

The L&CPU also holds knock out competitions, entry in to which is on a Club basis. Should the Society participate in these competitions entries would be required to pass through the Selection Committee. The process, conditions, rules etc. For the same would be announced in advance by the Competition Secretary.
